马太福音5:3的经文，早期中文译本翻译为心贫者。施约瑟浅文理译本开始使用「虚心者」，并加了注释，「原文作貧於心者」。这里「和合本」借鉴了「北京官话译本」，更早的「虚心的人」的翻译，又来源于「南京官话译本」的翻译。二十世纪中期以后中文译本均为「心灵贫穷的人」。大多英文译本均为「sprit」，「1599日内瓦圣经」的脚注为 「minds and spirits」，即「心和灵」。「虚心」当时是否是一个新造的词以及是否有不同的含义，我个人是不得而知了。
